Understanding depression

Depression is more than sadness. It can drain energy, disrupt sleep, affect concentration, and make once-pleasurable activities feel empty.

Common symptoms

Depression can look different for different people, but common signs include:

  • Persistent low mood or irritability
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in activities
  • Fatigue or low energy, even after rest
  • Changes in sleep or appetite
  • Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
  • Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, or hopelessness

What causes depression?

Depression is usually caused by a combination of biological, psychological, and environmental factors. Family history, medical conditions, major stressors, and certain medications can all contribute.

Treatment options

Treatment is highly effective for most people. Options include antidepressant medications, therapy (such as CBT or IPT), lifestyle changes, sleep improvement, and addressing medical or substance-related contributors. For some, a combination works best.
