Understanding ADHD

ADHD is often thought of as a childhood condition, but it frequently continues into adolescence and adulthood and can affect school, work, relationships, finances, and self-esteem.

Common symptoms

ADHD symptoms are not just about hyperactivity. Many children, adolescents, and adults experience:

  • Difficulty starting or finishing tasks
  • Forgetfulness, losing items, or missing deadlines
  • Trouble staying organized or managing time
  • Impulsive decisions or interrupting
  • Emotional sensitivity, frustration, or boredom
  • Restlessness or difficulty relaxing

Evaluation

A proper ADHD evaluation includes a detailed interview about current symptoms, childhood history, family history, medical issues, and how symptoms affect functioning. In some cases, rating scales or medical tests are used to rule out other conditions.

Treatment options

Treatment usually combines medication and skills-based strategies. Stimulant and non-stimulant medications can reduce core symptoms. Therapy, coaching, and organizational strategies help build routines, manage emotions, and improve relationships.
